The U.S. official had a meeting with Greek State Minister Nikos Pappas during a lunch given in the Treasury in Washington.
Reportedly, the two officials discussed the need to restructure the Greek debt, which, they agreed, should not be delayed.
The Greek minister expressed his satisfaction over a previous statement by Treasury Secretary Jack Lew who said that now is the time to discuss Greek debt relief.
Pappas stressed that Greece has fully implemented its bailout program obligations agreed with creditors last summer and now is the time to start discussing debt easing.
Mr. Sheets underlined the importance of Greece honoring the agreement with creditors, he expressed the belief there is room for an agreement on the bailout program review and expressed optimism that this would happen soon.
The U.S. official also said that any repeat of the Greek crisis would not be good news for the global economy and geopolitical stability, especially in light of the upcoming Brexit vote.
