Chios and Piraeus Port on a Tight Rope

The Chios and Piraeus ports are experiencing a “tense” situation asĀ refugees and migrants keep being stranded.
The “escape” of Chios hot-spot
After the clashes that occurred on Thursday night at the BIAL hot-spot in Chios, hundreds of refugees and migrants left on their own and moved towards the port and central city of Chios. Some refugees and migrants are afraid for their physical condition, while others for the possibility of being relaunched to Turkey in regard to the EU-Turkey agreement.
The situation in Idomeni and Piraeus
Things look tense at the Piraeus port too, as tensions between refugees and migrants with different nationalities are elevating, while manyĀ worry of being transferred and detained in a hot-spot.
Refugees and migrants in Idomeni camp are looking in suspense for an alternative passage towards Europe and refuseĀ to leave the camp.
Idomeni residentsĀ protested against refugees who refuse to leave the area.Ā The Ministry of Migration Policy and other authorities are trying to relieve the pressure atĀ Piraeus port and Idomeni by creating new accommodation spaces around Greece.
At a meeting on refuggees PM Alexis Tsipras was informed for the plan of action for the new accommodation spaces. Priority will be given to the refugees and migrants in Piraeus Port and Idomeni, while the EU-Turkey agreement will be implemented as far as the readmission part is concerned.
The operation will commence atĀ Piraeus portĀ in order to normalize the situation and to enable the port to work before the Orthodox Easter holiday traffic. The operation will be intense, however the usage of violence will be avoided according to government sources. “We are aiming to convince the refugees and migrants that they should trust the Greek authoritiesĀ and that they should be transferred into our official accommodation spaces.”
