The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, which participate in the Ledra Palace meetings at the UN buffer zone, agreed that security is vital for all inhabitants in Cyprus.
The parties, which met for their regular meeting taking place under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy, discussed on Wednesday the security issue.
Reading out the joint communique, Slovak Ambassador Oksana Tomova said that the leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties met today for their regular meeting at the Ledra Palace.
“They expressed opinions on the issue proposed by the hosting party, the (Turkish Cypriot) United Cyprus Party, how it is possible to truly maintain security in Cyprus” she said.
She added that “the political parties agreed that the security is vital for all inhabitants in Cyprus and agreed to work hard to take necessary measures to establish it.”
The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of the political parties will be held on April 27.
There are 15 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties participating at the Ledra Palace meetings.
The meetings in the Ledra Palace have been taking place since 1989.
The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, has been divided by Turkish troops since the Turkish invasion in 1974. UN led talks, aiming at reunifying the island under a federal political system, resumed in May 2015. Turkey still occupies 37% of Cyprus’ territory and refuses to withdraw its troops despite numerous resolutions and decisions by international organizations and Courts.
