Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who is thought to be the organizer of the attacks on Paris that claimed 129 lives, was killed during a police operation in Paris on Wednesday. Questions have arisen over how Abaaoud, who was born and raised in Belgium, was able to reach Europe given that authorities knew about his terrorist involvement in Syria.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that intelligence from a non-European nation found that Abaaoud had entered Europe through Greece.
The claim has not sat lightly with the Greek Citizen Protection Ministry, which issued an announcement on Friday, rejecting the claim and asking for an explanation from France.
The Ministry stated, “this piece of information has never been verified, and until today none of our sources have provided us with any information that confirms this specific allegation, which is based exclusively on publications of open sources of the January 2015 period, which are constantly being reproduced”. “We ask that the French authorities, in the context of our excellent cooperation in the fight against terrorism, immediately proceed with clarifications”.
