Following his meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras also met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday.
Tispras and Erdogan held a discussion on the refugee crisis and how the two neighboring countries can cooperate to halt the ongoing influx of migrants and refugees into Europe, through the Aegean Sea.
The Greek Prime Minister told Erdogan that Turkey and the European Union must soon come to an agreement on how Turkey will reduce migrant and refugee flows from the Turkish shores into Europe, Greek media report. The United Nations estimate that almost 690,000 people have arrived at Greece this year, primarily by crossing from Turkey to the East Aegean Greek islands.
Greek media report that Tsipras also pressed upon Erdogan the importance of an agreement on the process of refugee resettlement in Turkey.
In a joint press conference earlier in the day, Tsipras and Davutoglu noted that the Hellenic and Turkish Coast Guards will coordinate to this end, while ministries from the two countries will create committees to assist.
