The extent of the Volkswagen scandal, that has unfolded over the past three weeks with global implications, will be looked into, in Greece, following the decision of the Greek prosecutor.
The Greek prosecutor announced that two prosecutors will investigate any potential criminal responsibilities for Volkswagen vehicles that have been imported into Greece that include the disputed software.
The Volkswagen scandal broke out on September 18th, when the United States Environmental Protection Agency revealed that Volkswagen diesel cars emit nitrogen oxide at levels that exceed the permitted limit. The software installed in these diesel cars adjusted the car’s emission levels to be within the legal limit when the car was being tested in a controlled environment. These cars were being tested immediately before being cleared for sale to consumers. 11 million cars worldwide have the deceptive software, 8 million of which are in Europe, according to the German automobile manufacturer under scrutiny.
A few days ago, Volkswagen announced that 9,119 Volkswagen produced vehicles registered in Greece have the disputed software.
