tsiprasxi2Chinese President Xi Jinping invited Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to visit Beijing, according to a government source.
A member of the Greek delegation said that this is considered to be the most significant contact Tsipras made while in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Chinese President and the Greek Prime Minister agreed to strengthen the historic bonds and broaden cooperation between the two countries. The visit will be arranged through diplomatic channels.
The two leaders underlined the strategic importance of the Greek-Chinese cooperation in the fields of tourism, trade, shipping and culture. They also discussed developments in relation to the refugee issue and the war in Syria.
Relations between Greece and China have intensified in the past few years as Chinese state-owned shipping services company COSCO is among the three remaining contestants competing for a majority stake of the port of Piraeus, Greece’s largest port.
