Lenders Prepare a New Proposal for Last-Minute Deal with Greece

177977-176850-3As the Greek government is not willing to make more concessions in negotiations and asks for a political solution, the European Commission and the European Central Bank are preparing a new plan to present to Greece.
According to a report in Kathimerini daily, creditors are preparing a plan to ease the Greek debt, something that is Athens’ main request. The report cites a European official who asked to remain anonymous, saying that the EC and the ECB are to ask for an unofficial mini-summit after the June 25 summit where other important issues will be discussed, mainly the possibility of a Grexit and migration policy.
The same official is cited as saying that the EC and the ECB will offer Greece a deal that will ease the sovereign debt.
After Wednesday’s telephone conversation between Greek prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and EC President Jean-Claude Juncker acrimony between the two men subsided, with the latter saying that a deal is feasible until the end of the month.
Regarding today’s Eurogroup (Thursday), Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has stated that he will not present any new proposals because Athens is not willing to make any more concessions. There won’t be any developments on the Greek debt issue today, but it is certain that European Union finance ministers will set a time frame for negotiations and will ask for expediting procedures.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government is suggesting that Greece takes the necessary steps for a “realistic compromise.” Amanda Sloat, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, met on Wednesday with Alternate Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos in Athens. The U.S. official reportedly said that Greece’s failure to come to a deal with creditors will create immediate hardship in Greece and broad uncertainties for the Europe and world economy.
