Opening of ‘Athena’ Greek School’s New Building in Romania

gerontopoulos-Greek-schoolDuring his two-day visit to Romania this Wednesday and Thursday, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos attended the opening of “Athena” Greek School‘s new building. Later, he took a tour around the classrooms and other areas of the new facilities, while he also met with teachers and members of the Parents Association. Gerontopoulos congratulated them on the efforts and listened to their requests and problems.

Speaking to students, Gerontopoulos said: “It is with great pleasure that I return here, because this time I find you in a new space. This beautiful school building that embraces a distinct generation of Greek students. Children who grow up away from home, manage to stay close to Greek culture and the Greek language, thanks to the efforts of their parents and teachers.

Especially when it comes to a school like yours, it makes us really proud because it demonstrates important work in teaching the Greek language and culture, and preserving our national identity.

As Deputy Foreign Minister for Greeks Abroad, I want to congratulate everyone who contributed and continues to contribute to the operation of this school, parents and guardians, teachers and especially the students for their love for Greece, the Greek language and culture.”

Gerontopoulos then visited the offices of the Hellenic Union in Romania where he met with the Union’s President and Romanian MP Dragos Zisopoulos, as well as the board members of the Greek Community of Bucharest.

The Deputy Minister was informed about their diverse activities, involving teaching the Greek language, traditional dances, organizing the annual Greek language Olympiad, publishing books in Greek and Romanian, and efforts began to build a Greek church in Dragashani, where the Sacred Band monument is located.
