Impressive Hauling of Wreck off Mykonos Coast

mykonos wreckThe hauling of the wreck of the Yusuf Cepnioglou has been successfully completed after coordinated efforts by the Greek authorities. On March 7, 2014, the Turkish container ship ran aground due to bad weather on the rocky northern coast of the island of Mykonos.
Packed with 204 shipping containers, the cargo ship was en route to Izmir, Turkey from Tunisia. The vessel was abandoned by its crew members after it crashed into the rocks just off the Cycladic island.
Recovering the vessel from the sea bottom was strongly demanded by local Mykonos fishermen; its presence was polluting the local sea-life. Less than 24 hours after the sinking, Greek authorities pumped all the diesel fuel out of the ship. The next and most difficult step was the hauling of the ship’s 204 shipping containers. The operation, which lasted a total of seven months, is now finally complete.
