FC Panathinaikos Back in European Action Against Standard Liege

Nineteen months since their last European match, Panathinaikos is set to take charge against Standard Liege of Belgium. Today at 9pm Athens time (2pm EST) the “Clover” is looking to repeat its glory days and remind us all why Panathinaikos is a good representative of Greek soccer in Europe.
No one expected the Greens to close the 2013-14 season in Greece as successfully as they did. They beat PAOK Thessaloniki in the cup final 4-1, crucified rival Olympiacos 0-3 in Piraeus, and finished 2nd in the league. With a team full of youngsters many of whom had never played in the Greek Super League, anything but relegation would’ve sounded pleasing to the fans’ ears. However, with determination, hard work, humility, and coach Anastasiou as a brilliant guide, the team proved almighty and now they’re given the chance to fight for a Champions League spot in the 3rd preliminary round against Standard Liege.
The latter had their opening league match on Friday against Sporting Charleloi whom they easily beat 3-0. On the other hand, the Greek league hasn’t started yet, giving the Belgians a slight step ahead on preparation. Panathinaikos‘ last match was a friendly 2-1 victory over Atromitos of Athens on Tuesday.
The 42-year-old Greek manager has his mind at ease knowing that all his players are ready and set to play, with the exception of newly-signed, talented Ouasim Bouy on loan from Juventus FC, who has not been incorporated in the team yet. Experienced Croatian midfielder Mladen Petric has recovered from his lower back injury and is expected to start. The most possible line-up would be: Kotsolis,Triantafyllopoulos, Koutroumbis, Sindefeld, Nano, Pranic, Mendez, ZekaAjagunPetric and Berg.
Good luck Panathinaikos!
