Young Fey Bachla from Nea Makri was beaten to death by her 25-year-old boyfriend on April 6, 2013. His friend Vik Sarel and the victim’s sister, Marialena Bachla Marialena were also involved in the case, which was refered to a Special Magistrate. All three defendants were found guilty of the 23-year-old woman’s murder.
Vaggelis Stefanakis was found guilty of first degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment. During the announcement of the verdict he remained calm with his head down in remorse. The judge did not accept the mitigating circumstances due to previous clean criminal records for Stefanakis and the victim’s sister. The third defendant was also found guilty with the mitigating circumstance taken into consideration in his case.
Stefanakis was sentenced to life imprisonment for premeditated homicide  and Marialena Bachla was sentenced to five years suspended imprisonment with perjury charges and aiding a criminal. She is also obligated to appear in the Police Department in her place of residence every month. The third defendant Vik Sarel was sentenced to one year imprisonment with suspension.
As the prosecutor stated, “Stefanakis met Marialena at the gym and was attracted by this beautiful woman. She was divorced and unemployed and when she realized that Stefanakis prefered her sister rather than her, she started spreading vicious rumors about her.”
Stefanakis claimed he had chosen Fey to be his girlfriend but couldn’t get away from Marialena’s charm, something that was proven by their frequent contact. He also claimed that he was unable to control his strength when hitting the woman, but the prosecutor turned down his argument saying that “Stefanakis exercised often at the gym and knew martial arts. Consequently, he must have been totally aware of his strength.”
“Fey’s ability to defend herself was non-existing. The defendants father was the one to describe her as a fragile ornament after all,” she added.
The prosecutor also highlighted that Stefanakis did not have any feelings for Fey. He was just flattered by the fact that two beautiful sisters were fighting over him. Deep inside, he only cared for himself.
“To Marialena, Stefanakis was the trophy between herself and her sister.”
