Corruption Down But Still Rife in Greece

corruption greeceAccording to the annual report by “Transparency International – Greece”, corruption decreased in Greece in 2013, with 15% fewer cases reported than in 2012. An encouraging 30% of the people asked said that they refused to give any kind of bribe or pay extra money if they were asked, both in the public and private sector.
However, the most corrupt institutions in Greece are state hospitals, according to the report presenters, Kostas Bakouris, head of Transparency International – Greece and Yiannis Mavris, president of Public Issue.
Furthermore, another form of corruption was introduced for the first time this year, concerning citizens who do not issue receipts.
However, 70% of corruption incidents occur in public services, the report found. Hospitals, tax authorities and urban planning services ranked highest on the list of corrupt agencies. Corruption actually increased 5% at hospitals, while tax authorities and urban planning services showed a decrease of 1.2% and 2.8% respectively.
In the private sector, meanwhile, the health industry, along with banks, lawyers, the car industry and the construction department were all found to be widely corrupt.
