Israeli Foreign Minister's Visit in Athens

liebermanThe Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Avigdor Lieberman, visited Athens, Greece on Thursday, March 20, in order to discuss Israel’s cooperation with Greece in sectors beyond those of defense and intelligence exchange.
Lieberman met with the Greek President, Karolos Papoulias, as well as with Greece’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Evangelos Venizelos and the Minister of National Defense Dimitris Avramopoulos. The Israeli government is aiming for a collaboration with Greece in the field of energy. Recently, the Israeli energy firm “Delek” contacted Greek companies in order to discuss the export of compressed natural gas (CNG) from the Leviathan field. The Greek government supported the construction of the “East-Med'” pipeline that will connect the natural gas fields in Israel and Cyprus to the European market.
As reported, it is estimated that relations between the two countries in the fields of research, technology and tourism will further develop. Moreover, Israel expects that Greece, during its EU presidency, will have a more “balanced” stance in case the EU implements sanctions concerning the negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.
