Greek Doctors Protest Outside Ministry of Health

On Thursday morning, Greek doctors, nurses and employees of EOPYY left their offices and gathered in the centre of Athens to protest against the Greek government’s plans concerning the ostensible reform of Greece’s main healthcare provider.
After 11 am, protesters rallied outside the Greek Ministry of Health and were expected to march to the Greek Parliament as the bill was under voting procedure.
Trade unionists, who were representing EOPYY’s employees, claimed that the imminent reforms will dissolve the existing health structures in Greece and will lead to “unspeakable difficulties for the patients.”
Coalition deputies have stated that they will vote in favour of the enactment of the bill despite their reservations.
Democratic Left (DIMAR) announced its intentions of voting against the bill as they think it will destroy the Greek healthcare services.
DIMAR also referred to the Greek government’s plans of putting more than 8,000 EOPYY employees in an ostensible mobility scheme of forced transfers and suspensions which are expected to inflict insecurity and mistrust.
Doctors fighting over the bill
What is more, on Wednesday, February 5, the Special Partisan Organization of New Democracy’s Physicians met at the invitation of its secretary Stathis Tsoukalos.
The few attendants were discussing the bill of the Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, under great strain.
According to sources, the President of the Medical Association in Piraeus Varvara Anemodoura disputed with the President of the Panhellenic Medical Association Michalis Vlastarakos. The dispute resulted in physical contact and Mrs. Anemodoura hit her head on a wall and lost consciousness. She was hospitalized and now remains stable.
