145,000 Greek Students Facing Malnutrition

Students in nearly one thousand schools in Greece (975 up to now) are affected by the phenomenon of malnutrition. Some schools are applying for food assistance.
This means that approximately 145,000 students are faced daily with the risk of malnutrition. This number is triple the 50,000 children which the Program on Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition, run by the Prolepsis Institute, could cover. Figures released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reveal just how much the economic crisis has hit Greek families.
Hunger continues to reign in schools and the applications for food aid have doubled (from 500 submitted during the first year of the program). So far the program serves 305 schools and 44,697 students, which this year is expected to rise to 320 schools and 50,000 students.
