Government Officials Criticize Ambassador's Home Shooting

police_car_390Early this morning, a shooting took place outside the German ambassador to Greece’s residence in Halandri in Athens, Greece. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the assault as “very serious.” Meanwhile, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras contacted German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the shooting. He assured her that the Greek government was determined to find and prosecute the shooters.
Police have six people in custody and are currently questioning them in relation to the shooting incident. After searching the area outside the ambassador, Wolfgang Dold home, they found 60 used bullets from Kalashnikov assault rifles (AK47s) and police are now trying to establish if the rifles have been used in other attacks. One of the bullets was found in the room of the ambassador’s daughter.
The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs commented on the shooting, saying that it was “an attempt to cast Greece in a bad light,” especially so close to the country’s upcoming European Union Presidency.
Furthermore, the German Foreign Minister said that the attack should be taken “very seriously.” He continued, “Nothing at all can justify an attack against a representative of our country.”
Finally, he said that he was rather satisfied by the Greek Police’s immediate response to the incident and noted that as much as they tried, the shooters would not succeed in harming ties between Germany and Greece.
