Greek Workers from Eight Hospitals on Strike

Greek doctors protest over upcoming wage cutsAthens residents needing medical treatment on Wednesday may face problems over a walkout scheduled from 11 am until 3 pm local time by Greek doctors and medical staff from eight hospitals in the capital – Evanghelismos, West Attica general hospital, Patision, Amalia Fleming, Seventh hospital of Ika, Sismanogleio, Agios Savas and Attikon. Workers are protesting against the shutdown of a number of wards at the eight hospitals and the layoff of hundreds of employees.
The National federation of public hospital workers (Poedin) criticized in a statement ‘the closure of wards at the eight hospitals which deprive the national healthcare system (Esy) of 650 accommodations at a time when citizens need them the most’.
Middle school and high school teachers are also scheduled to strike on Wednesday from 11 am until 2 pm local time ina walkout organized by the National federation of middle and high school teachers (Olme). The teachers are asking, among other things, for ‘welfare coverage for all and immediate initiatives to support education’ a statement said.
