Some 10 percent of municipal policemen, which corresponds to about 320 out of the 3,200 the Municipal Police employ, have been hired with fake certificates, as it was revealed on Aug. 22 by the Deputy Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance Evi Christofilopoulou on a TV interview.
The deputy minister based her statements on the inspections carried out by the Audit Board of Public Administration. Christofilopoulou estimated that the number of people that will be hired by the Municipal Police will eventually fall to 5-10 percent of the total number of employees.
According to local administration sources, it is likely that the number of people who were hired with fake certificates could amount to 500.
With the prosecutor’s intervention, three people with fake certificates have already been dismissed. Inspections are expected to be completed soon.
