Building Permits Fell 50.1% In May

oikodomThe number of building permits that were published in May 2013 in relation to those published in May 2012, according to data by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), showed a drop of 50.1 percent.
The volume of the total building activity – private and public – measured based on the building permits published was 1,203 permits in May this year, less than half the same period a year before, showing the depth of the country’s economic recession and how long it’s last, now into a sixth year.
The volume of the private building activity on the country’s whole reached 1,190 permits, that is a 50,5 percent decrease on the number of permits compared to the same month in 2012.
During the last 12 months, from June 2012 until May 2013, the volume of the total building activity – private and public- measured based on the building permits published on the country’s whole, reached 17,902 permits. A decrease of 47.8 percent on the number of building permits was observed in relation to the same period June 2011 to May 2012.
During the same period, June 2012-May 2013, the private building activity dropped 47.9 percent compared to the same period June 2011-May 2012. The participation percentage of the public building sector is only 4.1 percent.
During the five-month period January-May 2013, the total building activity presented on the country’s whole a decrease of 41.5 percent on the number of building permits, in relation to the same period of the year 2012. The private building activity presented a decrease of 41.1 percent on the number of building permits compared to the same period January-May 2012.
