Kallithea Nightclub Ignores Order To Close

kiamosA nightclub in Kallithea area of Athens, Chalkidiki, where the popular Greek singer Panos Kiamos was performing, was ordered shut for 48 hours after inspectors from Greece’s Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) in Theassaloniki found a number of tax evasion violations but the owners ignored the order and kept operating without repercussions.
The SDOE put out a press release claiming a victory over tax evasion as the government said it would try to crack down as have all other governments which didn’t. In the meantime, the club kept right on running as if nothing had happened, reports said and the “closing” was on paper only.
When the SDOE returned, they arrested the manager and another employee but the club kept running anyway. The commander of the local police department was suspended and an investigation into what happened was ordered. It’s common in Greece for nightclubs, many of them operating unlawfully, not to issue receipts and ignore citations against violations.
