Even in Prison Greece Has VIP's

FIGARO_373_355The French newspaper Le Figaro has an extensive reportage-tribute to the Korydallos prison in Athens, and especially to Wing 6, the so called VIP wing.
The newspaper writes:
In the lethargy of summer, there’s a place which is better protected from the heat wave which is afflicting Athens. This is Wing 6 of the Korydallos Prison. Those who are “tenants” of this wing, enjoy a preferential treatment. They are the so called VIP prisoners. With the fall of the colonels in 1974, the dictators who were sentenced to life imprisonment were incarcerated there.
But today, the tenants of Wing 6 are those arrested for debts to the state. Of course, these tenants are not just anybody…
Among them are businessmen, bankers, shipowners, politicians, fashion designers.
During the day they enjoy their time in a private prison yard. They read newspapers, magazines, books and play backgammon. They do not eat the food the prison serves, but order their meals from outside.
In the past, when the heat was unbearable, they dived in a small swimming pool. But when this was revealed by the press, the swimming pool was filled with debris.
The other prison wings are completely different from the VIP wing. The cells are much smaller and have a lot of fuss. Usually, six people live in a cell of 30 m².
12,500 people are imprisoned in Korydallos, which has a capacity of 8,500 people.
