Greek Glendi Returns to Thebarton Oval

p3080010-300x260The Glendi Festival, the annual Greek weekend event of the South Australian community, will be held this year at its original home at Thebarton Oval, as it was announced by the West Torrens Council.

The Glendi Greek Festival (Glendi is a Greek word meaning “party”) was established in 1978 by the Lions Club of Adelaide Hellenic and West Torrens Football Club. Through its events the Festival has managed to promote Hellenism in South Australia by showcasing its history and culture and to raise money for many different charities and for the benefit of various local Greek brotherhoods, associations and clubs.

The festival has a good reputation amongst the broader Adelaide and South Australian community and attracts up to 40,000 visitors of Greek and non-Greek background. This is why it has turned into something more than a Greek festivity; it has become the largest multicultural festival in South Australia.

The Glendi Festival was held for the first time in 1978 at Thebarton Oval. Up to 2008 it was taking place at Ellis Park in the city of Adelaide and then it was moved to the Adelaide Showgrounds. This year, the Festival’s 35th anniversary will be celebrated at its inaugural location. “It’s a great idea. It’s coming back to where it originally came from,” Councilor George Demetriou told Adelaide Now.

The newspaper said more than 20,000 people are expected to attend the Glendi this year and to enjoy the dances, the music, the food, the wine and to attend the cultural and artistic and educative events of this multicultural event.

The Festival will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at Thebarton Oval, 1 Meyer St, Torrensville, South Australia, 5031. For more information visit www.glendigreekfestival.com.au/
