A large fire that broke out July 21 in a remote spot on the island of Samos was said be contained by firefighters who had to battle heavy winds that ripped the flames furiously across the landscape.
Fire crews had 10 vehicles, a contingent of firefighters and were getting aerial drops of water to put out the flames and prevent them from claiming more land. Volunteers also aided the battle.
According to the Forecasting Fire Danger Charter issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection for July 22 with a high fire hazard in the areas of Attica, the North Aegean and the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria and Lasithi and Heraklion, Crete.
