Chania's Beach Loses 20 Acres A Year

tromaktikoTwenty acres of beach are being lost each year in Chania on Crete, according to TUC Professor Costas Synolakis who presented the course of the study so far over the causes of the coastal erosion in the northern part of the Gulf of Chania, from Kolympari until Nea Kidonia.
Within the framework of the study jointly conducted by the Greek Center for Marine Research with the Technical University of Crete TUC, two meters have been placed in the sea area of Gerani and out of the Venetian port of Chania.
The two counters are in 25 meters depth and send audio signals from the seabed to the surface, in order to determine the cause of the sand transfer and find effective solutions.
The biggest problem is located near the beaches of Kolympari, Tauronitis and Platanias.
As far as the causes of erosion are concerned, as revealed by the study, in each storm much more sand than expected is being lost, while the poor design of harbors that prevent the sand ashore, seems to exacerbate the phenomenon.
