Niarchos Foundation Boosts Benaki Museum

366558582062FDA05A9AE8CE98640C6ESince January of 2012 the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has been working to help improve the lives of Greeks during a crushing economic crisis, putting up 100 million euros ($130 million) to help charities and NGOs, and part of the money will go to also help the beleaguered Benaki Museum, one of the country’s most famous.
The museum, like many others, is suffering losses during the crisis. , George Agourides, a member of Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation who was also on a panel of speakers at a news conference said the organization will help in two ways.
The first is to support the museum enough to allow free admission once a week in the four buildings and the second to sponsor aid through matching funds.
The foundation’s leaders said it will match money raised by museum officials, effectively doubling the intake. “There is a voluntary group of close friends who works systematically to provide funds, “said Museum Director, Angelos Delivorrias. He said he wants to restore the museum’s glory.
