Riot Police Surround Athens Rectorate Building

43FE2342CB45381F245438360874272AThe police proceeded to 20 arrests while the fire service was called to open the door of the Rectorate building where students were locked in order to avoid being arrested.
On the morning of July 8 there was unrest at the Propylaia, after theĀ  students’ peaceful “invasion” in the meeting of the new administration of the University of Athens in order for their views to be heard.
According to information, a member of the administration called the police immediately and the riot police arrived and surrounded the building.
Fifty members of administration including clerical staff and students were found enclosed in the building. Meanwhile, the Fire Service was called to open the door of the Rectorate building with a wheel, in order to extricate the students who were locked inside.
The traffic on the roads around was blocked, while tension prevailed, with riot police using chemicals during the arrests.
The police operation was completed shortly before 12:30 with 20 arrests. The roads were re-opened.
