Babies who are stillborn or die of other reasons after being born in Greek hospitals are reportedly being dumped in mass graves without the parents being notified of how they were disposed.
The Greek Ombudsman made the accusation after looking into a complaint from a mother whose newborn child died in the hospital and investigators said the child “buried in a mass grave and they (hospital) refused to do the exhumation.”
The investigators said that led to the discovery that many other infants were being disposed of in the same manner and without religious burial ceremonies.
The Ombudsman’s office, in a 2008 report on the conditions of the operation of cemeteries, among others had highlighted the issue of the unlawful mass burial of infants in the cemetery of Athens. City officials said they had no knowledge of that or the claims the procedure was still going on.
