Crete Alarmed Over Earthquakes

creteThe intense seismic activity in the region of Crete in recent days has worried the island’s authorities, who fear a major earthquake with possible material – and other – damage.
Crete continues to “be shaken” in the aftermath of the earthquakes as another quake struck on June 18, followed by dozens of aftershocks. Since an earthquake which hit 6 on the Richter Scale occurred on June 15, some 40 aftershocks have followed.
According to ethnos.gr, seismologists monitor the phenomenon carefully as all earthquakes recorded in the sea area south of Heraklion, where the so-called Greek arc spread is of concern. The new tremor was centered 84 kilometers south of Timpaki at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The earthquake was perceptible throughout the island, but there were no reports of injuries or damage as the major activity occurred under sea.
