Greek-Australians Honored for Queen’s Birthday

Queen1Seven Greek-Australians were honored by the Australian state on June 10, in the framework of distinctions that are awarded to citizens on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s birthday.

A total of 582 individuals were awarded for their contribution to the community, while 199 distinctions were awarded to employees in security bodies and the Armed Forces.

University professor, Petro Georgiou, was awarded with the second highest distinction of the Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia, for his contribution to the Parliament of Australia, concerning multiculturalism and human rights advocacy and the community in general.

John Nicolakis from Darwin and Constantine Dionysios Vertzayias from Sydney were awarded the distinction of the Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for their significant service to the Australian-Greek community.

The Medal in the General Division of the Order of Australia was given to Angeliki Kay Alexiou, deceased, for service to women’s health and to the community, Kyriakos Amanatidis for service to the Australian-Greek community, as an author and through a range of cultural organizations, and to George Nikolaidis for his service to Blacktown Community.

Nicholas Constantine Lentakis was honored with the Medal of Contribution in the Queensland Ambulance Service on the same day.
