Austrian Paper Cites Greek Youth Flight

unempo_GreeceThe Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung, joining a chorus of those who have discovered that Greece’s crushing economic crisis and austerity measures are making people flee their homeland, particularly the young and educated, wrote that, “Greece is losing its best talents.”

Unemployment is a record 27 percent in Greece, some 64 percent for those under 25 years old, many of them recent college graduates who can’t find a job, a problem that also affects those in other countries with fiscal problems such as Spain and Portugal.

The paper noted that European Union authorities have done little to stop it and that EU officials indeed have made the problem worse by insisting on austerity measures in countries with economic problems in return for bailouts.

Talking about the thousands of scientists who’ve left Greece in the last five years, the newspaper said that people who left the country in other periods, such as the 1960’s, were mostly unskilled workers but now it’s the better-educated who are fleeing.

The article entitled Rebellion of the Youth underlines the rage that young people feel, as the young are mainly hit by unemployment. They are described as a “lost generation,” without perceptive, while the newspaper told the story  of four young people from Thessaloniki, Madrid, Rome and Stockholm.

According to the article, due to the ongoing crisis, Germany attracts many immigrants, whose number is the highest in the last 20 years. Last year some 369,000 people, mostly Greek, Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese immigrated to Germany.
