Greeks May Organize Aussies’ Withdrawal from Afghanistan

A.Theodosiou_P.NAustralian soldiers’ withdrawal from Afghanistan may be organized by Greeks, as the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS), Vice Admiral, Alexandros Theodosiou, stated on the SBS Radio Greek Program.

Theodosiou visited Australia on the occasion of the 72nd Anniversary of the Battle of Crete and discussed the Greek side’s proposition with his Australian counterparts.

“The Hellenic Armed Forces have this possibility,” he said and added that “Now that foreign forces are leaving Afghanistan, some of our executives are in Karachi and are working towards this direction.”

Theodosiou said the Australians found the Greek proposition interesting and will proceed to consider it. He reported that the Australian side has a positive attitude on the perspective of sending naval vessels to Lemnos and Gallipoli, on the occasion of the celebration in 2015, as well as the cooperation with the Hellenic Navy on small scale technical exercises in the Aegean Sea.

They are considering the possibility to send two frigates alike the Greek ones, and in this context there may be joint exercises, he noted.

Theodosiou pointed out that the financial crisis has affected the Hellenic Armed Forces’ equipment, but not their fighting ability, while he judged that Turkey behaves “as a spoiled child” by provoking both the airspace and the sea.
