Ten Greek Islands Left Adrift

1247867_551_355Municipal officials on 10 Greek islands have written a letter to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and leaders of other political parties omplaining they have shortages of essentials such as enough water, transportation and doctors.
The municipal authorities of Corfu, Lefkada, Naxos and Kythera joined with the islands of re Othonoi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Kalamos, Kastos, Irakleia, Sxinousa, Donousa, Koufonisia and Antikythera to register their displeasure.
The deputy mayors of the islands are demanding their authorities be excluded from the Kallikratis consolidation plan, arguing that “each island is a municipality”.
“Our islands are one step before abandonment,” they said. They recommend the integration of projects for the accessibility and tourism development, the placement of rural doctors in all single-seat regional clinics of the islands and the maintaining of subsidies for the transport on unprofitable lines.
