The Greek Police (EL.AS) Organized Crime Squad along with the financial crimes squad (SDOE) have conducted a joint operation to raid pharmacies and drug wholesalers they said have unlawfully engaged in drugs trafficking.
The operations targeted Athens and other cities nationwide, such as Thessaloniki, Rhodes and Komotini. About 300 pharmacies, companies and individuals were involved, it was reported, to take drugs, including cancer medicines, destined for Greek patients and selling them in other European countries, such as Germany and Sweden, at a higher price.
According to Greek media, during inspections, authorities found two pharmacies and two wholesalers in Thessaloniki that were selling medicines without approval of the National Organization for Medicines (EOF).
Suspects were being questioned by authorities, while considerable quantities of the medicines were confiscated. There were unconfirmed reports that 10 people had been arrested so far.
