Germany Needs More Foreign Nurses

401px-Nursing_babyGerman Health Minister Daniel Bahr told Die Welt newspaper on April 22 that he will take the necessary steps in order for immigration rules to be easy on healthcare workers. According to Bahr, Germany faces a chronic lack of care staff.

Bahr told Die Welt that, “In the past, immigration helped Germany increase its number of doctors.” The German Minister of Health also admits that the lack of qualified personnel in the health sector is, partly due to the low wages and stresses the need for health care professions to become more attractive.

Making it easier for nurses and healthcare assistants should be number one priority. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling conservative Christian Democrats did not accept the proposition that would enable more foreign nurses to come to Germany. Bahr, who is a member of their junior coalition party, the Free Democrats (FDP), plans to reintroduce the proposition, citing the major demographic problem of Germany.
