Crisis Pushes Some Greeks Into Trailers

550_334_222192With a record 27 percent unemployment rate and crushing austerity measures impoverishing 20 percent of Greeks, many are turning to living in trailers instead of homes or apartments they can no longer afford.
The financial crisis, unemployment, high taxes – including a second property tax known as haratsi – and difficulty in selling and buying through the estate agency Real Estate Direct in Greece are some of the reasons Greeks are reportedly giving up on traditional means of living.
During the last two years, many people exchanged their property for anything that is cheaper, including house trailers. “It is about a new form of bartering that has been developed due to lack of money liquidity,” specialists report.
One report was that a family traded a house for a trailer because they couldn’t afford their electric bill. In another, a couple exchanged their car for a trailer.
