Mykonos Mayors Charged With Embezzlement

mykonosComing on the heels of the conviction of a former mayor of Thessaloniki on corruption charges, prosecutors are charging Mykonos Mayor  Athanasios Kousathanas – Megas and former mayor Christos Veronis with embezzlement during their terms running the famous island’s government.
Prosecutor George Economou proposed to the Board of Appeal to indict the two in a case that comes just as the tourist season is about to begin in earnest. Economou said the case involves some 10 million euros ($13 million) in missing funds, the newspaper Kathimerini reported.
Besides embezzlement, the suspects are charged with issuing of false certificates against the public during the decade 2002-12. Two other municipal officials who served during the period 2002-09, Thrasivoulos Kontomitros and Alexandros Vamvakouris have been charged as well for false certification statements.
A businessman is also accused of perjury and instigation to a false certificate usurpation attempt in a degree misdemeanor. Charges were dropped however against a deputy head of the municipality, two bank officials and 12 businessmen.
