Estia’s Historic Athens Bookshop Closed

image20Estia’s historic bookshop closed on March 30 after 128 years of functioning, another  victim of Greece’s crushing economic crisis and changing times as people turn away from books to reading on computers, Kindles and e-books, and even their cell phones.
The venerable store, a favorite of book lovers, was located for the last 21 years on Solonos Street in the center of Athens and previously on Stadiou. In its long history, Estia has related its name to famous literary societies, while the editions Estia managed for years the literary production of Greece.
From 1885 until today intellectuals and politicians found in Estia a hospitable environment to communicate. Greek authors used to meet there and the bookshop contributed its part in the development of Greek literature.  Psycharis, Palamas, Drosinis, Xenopoulos. N. Politis, Roidis are only few of the Greek poets and writers who used to come to Estia.
Estia has revealed many talented writers and was loved by its fans and wrote its own page in the history of Greek literature. While the store has closed, the Estia edition will go on.
