Prominent Greek-American astrophysicist Stamatios Krimigis is among the researchers involved in the Particle Environment Package experiment of the 2022 European Space Agency mission to Jupiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE), that will study Jupiter and three of its largest moons in unprecedented detail. The moons are thought to harbor vast water oceans beneath their icy surfaces.
JUICE is among the 11 experiments which have been selected after tough competition. This is a detector of charged and neutral particles that implements technologies for space research. The design and construction of PEP instrument is coordinated by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics-IRF with the participation of institutions from both Europe and the U.S.
Krimigis is dealing with pioneer researches and applications in NASA. He has received a number of awards and accolades, including President of the International Academy of Astronautics, honorary director at the Space Department of the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University (USA), National Representative of Greece in the European Space Agency (ESA), member of the Academy of Athens are only some of the successful scientist’s titles.
He has been selected several times by NASA as head researcher of many scientific teams for the design and the construction of the machines for its pioneer spacecrafts Voyager-1 and Voyager-2, Galileo, Cassini, and many others.
