Hermes Puts Stamp On Penthouse

shhermisThe first Greek stamp which was issued in 1861 by the Greek Post and depicted the head of Greek God Hermes, now adorns the Hermes Penthouse apartment, created from an old post office on Dundas Place, the mains trip of Melbourne’s affluent Albert Park suburb.

The old building’s renovation was done by the director of Melbourne’s Redesign Group, Emanuel Giorgio, who bought it along with his wire and decided to turn it into an apartment complex and shops.

He said he had the idea to combine the post office with Hermes, Messenger of the Gods. The artist collaborator Kate Spencer was searching to find an image of one of the first ever Greek stamps which bears the profile of the winged messenger.

“The process was difficult and costly. One of the reasons is that the old post office is a listed building and we could not make many changes,” said Giorgio.

After four years of consultation with the local municipality, the permission was given and the design finally met planning approval. The complex has eight apartments sold with an entry level price of $700,000.
