Bellos Nominated for Australian of the Year

bellosPolice Sergeant Dimitris Bellos has been nominated for The Australian of the Year Awards on the occasion of the Australia Day which is on Jan. 26 and commemorates the establishment of the first settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. Bellos had helped in saving his fellow citizens in the deadly floods which hit Queensland.

Bellos went to Canberra where he was welcomed by the Governor General, the Prime Minister and other officials. A number of other Greek-Australians are set to be honored. In Victoria, Greeks who were proclaimed Ambassadors of Australia Day are: Soprano Stella Axarlis; the entrepreneur Nick Theodosis; news presenter George Donikian; the Chairman of the humanitarian organization Care, Sakis Zafeiropoulos; and the general director of Care, George Lekakis.
