Skafidas An Australian Leading Figure

skafidasProfessor Efstratios (Stan) Skafidas of the University of Melbourne was voted by the newspaper The Age, as one of the leading figures in Australia that “will make history in the years to come.”

He identified a genetic test which can measure a child’s risk of developing an autism spectrum disorder from six months of age. Skafidas says it is the first time there has been a genetic test for a neuro-psychiatric disorder.

Skafidas was born in 1971. His parents were from Amaliada and Kalamata, and arrived in Melbourne in the early 1960s.

He is a Professor of Nano Electronics and the Director of the Centre for Neural Engineering, and leads the university’s research in Nano electronics, the area of electronics engineering devoted to creating miniscule components.

According to him, this genetic test has 70 per cent accuracy. “Where it has the most utility is being able to identify children at risk and then allowing us to actually monitor and understand what’s happening in order to be able to provide interventions and better understand what the underlying causes of that disease or disorder are,” he stated.
