Ulysses Undecided: A Research of Greek Students in Italy

Ulysses-undecidedUlysses undecided is the title of a research conducted by Greek-Italian sociologist Andrea Pelitsia dedicated to Greek student mobility in Italy.

From March to December 2011, Pelitsia addressed the analysis of this phenomenon, with all its sociological aspects. He conducted detailed interviews to avoid a cold statistic research. These interviews expose the problems and peculiarities of students’ lives. The analysis of Greek student mobility is proved to be very important in understanding aspects of the Greek society and the reasons which prompted the students to leave their country, especially in this historical period characterized by an unprecedented economic crisis in Greece.

Pelitsia’s research aims at studying the characteristics of the Greek students in Italian universities by giving ideas to improve decision making. The research analyzes their migratory plans, training, expectations of study, evaluation of the universities and job prospects by taking as a hypothesis the Ulysses metaphor, in that it is possible to return to Greece by means of their cultural capital.
