Vienna Concert to Honor Mikis Theodorakis

The great Greek conductor Mikis Theodorakis is going to visit world’s classical music capital, Vienna, to attend a concert commemorating his work, which will be held in the prestigious Vienna Konzerthaus on Dec. 14.

The world famous composer had promised longtime friend and colleague Alexandros Karozas, also a composer, that he would come. The concert was an initiative of Karozas, who produced most of the recordings of the symphonic Theodorakis works, to encourage “the grand old man” to come to Vienna.

After the success of Karozas’ The Cavafy Project to honor the great Greek poet, the two friends met to talk about a concert in Vienna. Theodorakis, particularly dear to Austrian friends of music, had attended a concert which presented Cando General,  Neruda’s tenth book of poems, held in 1998 in Linz.

The renowned Greek singer Maria Farantouri is going to present her interpretation of Theodorakis’s Mauthausen Cycle, which will be a part of the program which is illustrating the diversity of the complete works of Theodorakis in a unique way.

The complete works reach out from popular Greek music to oratorios, operas, chamber music and symphonies. Likewise, the music of  the Requiem as well as excerpts from the famous ballet suite Zorba’s Dance, with Karozas on bouzouki, will sound on this unique evening.
