Glezos Tells CNN of Nazi War Crimes

Manolis Glezos, a Greek hero for pulling the Nazi flag down from the Acropolis in 1941 and, with the help of a friend, the late Apostolos Santas, replacing it with the Greek flag, has told CNN reporter Diana Magnay of what he said were war crimes by the Germans during WWII.

He also referred to resistance fighters’ sacrifice as well as the executions of Kesariani, Distomo and others around the country and that of his his brother, Nikolas Glezos, who was executed in Kaisariani, dropping a hat as he was being led to death after having written a message to their mother.

Glezos said that “The Germans’ hostility and Memorandum prove that Germany still has a debt owing to Greece dating from the war,” referring to a deal the Greek government has signed with international lenders for bailouts, and insistence by Germany – the biggest contributor – for harsh austerity measures, as well as cries that Germany should pay war reparations for atrocities.

“This age’s situation picture and the resistance of the Greek people to the Troika’s plans, is similar to Greeks’ Resistance against the Axis Powers,” CNN said, presenting pictures of the recent protests in Athens opposing  new economic measures.
