Frantic to find cash in a crushing economic crisis, Greece has begun the selling-off of some of its diplomatic properties, putting its Consulate in the Turkish cit of Izmir on the market, the news agency Anadolu reported. The asking price was not given.
Municipality of Konak urban area is interested in purchasing the building, it was reported. According to the municipality head Hakan Tartan, the historic building will be restored and probably operate as a museum of the history of Izmir. He expressed hope that the government and the country’s banks will provide the necessary funds to purchase the building.
Greece is ready to sell other properties around Europe, including in Brussels and London in hopes of raising cash and reducing operating expenditures in diplomatic holdings around the world.
Greece denies reports of selling consulate building
The Greek Embassy in Ankara has denied recent reports suggesting that the Greek consulate building in İzmir was now on the market due to the Aegean country’s struggling economy.
Ankara Ambassy Press official Elizabeth Mako said the building was currently being restored.
“The histroical building is of great importance to us,” Mako said.
Mako further said that while the Greek state was able to sell its properties in Turkey, no such information had yet been passed on to the embassy.
