Australia has become within the last years a very popular study destination attracting international students from around the world. The incoming students boost the Australian economy by billions of dollars per year and cover the costs of education for local students as well.
However, the inability to attain work experience in Australia after the study program is completed, may turn into a barrier for international students willingness to travel to Australia for study.
A Deaking University study showed that getting a job after their studies is very important to foreign students when deciding to leave their country for their tertiary education. Universities, employers and the government need to cooperate and provide foreign students with more work options if they wish for Australia to maintain its status as one of the highly desirable study destinations.
The problem with international students is that they do not have a permanent or work visa when they first travel to Australia as students and cannot get a visa unless they find a job. In essence, they are caught in a Catch-22.
Australia is one of the most attractive study options for Greeks too. While Greece has more students studying abroad than any other nation, Australia, with its strong Greek community, has been promoted recently as the best place to start anew for Greeks trying to escape the debt crisis, especially young students.
