Greece Announces Merger Plans for State Agencies

The Greek government announced on Tuesday the merger or cutting of about 20 public agencies in an effort to axe state spending as called for by the country’s EU-IMF lenders.
In a statement, the ministry said that 5,256 employees from the affected organisations “would not be laid off” but transferred to other public sector jobs “where their capacity is needed.”
In the reform, the ministry said 15 entities will be merged into nine, while five agencies, including the archealogical research fund, will be axed and integrated into appropriate ministries for a total savings of 40 million euros.
The announcement comes as auditors from the so-called troika of lenders — the International Monetary Fund, European Union and European Central Bank — return to Greece to check the debt-ridden country’s progress under an international bailout programme.
