Tarpon Springs Presents Gulf Maritime Fest, Full of Greek Events

The city of Tarpon Springs in Florida hosts the third annual Gulf Maritime Festival on Saturday, July 14 from 11 am to 7 pm on the Sponge Docks Dodecanese Boulevard between Hope and Roosevelt Streets.

The event is ideal for everyone interested in learning about Florida’s waters and their history. Fishing, sponge diving, boat building and crabbing are only some of the activities attendants will have the chance to learn about. Fishermen as well fish poets, such as Robert “Doc” Powell, will come together in Tarpon Springs to present their work while participants will be enjoying the sea, music and great food.

These free events include live Greek music and dance performances, blue grass and western swing- America and Greece in one-day-event! Among the participants will be National Heritage Fellow Nicholas Toth, who makes sponge diving helmets, as well as several Florida Folk Heritage Award winners including Taso Karistinos (sponge diver, captain), George Saroukos (boat builder) and George Soffos (Greek musician), all of Greek descent.
