French National Dies in Question-Raising Incident in Athens

A French national died in Athens in a tragic movie-like incident on Wednesday morning in the region of Ampelokipi, Athens.
The 28-year-old man was being transferred to the French Embassy by a police car, without wearing handcuffs and without being under arrest, when he suddenly sprang out the vehicle and rushed into the open door of a block of flats in Ampelokipi.
The man went up the stairs and made it to the roof of the building where he tried to escape by jumping to the opposite building. He got mangled in a batch of electricity cables and could not manage to hold himself resulting in his falling down and losing his life at 11:20 in the morning.
The 28-year-old French national was wandering around the area of Peania asking for food from homes and stores. A Greek citizen informed the police and asked them to help the man. A police vehicle found him and led him to the station (Glykon Neron). Officers called the French Embassy and were about to transfer him there to get assistance, but during his transportation things got unexpectedly out of control.
Police confirmed that he was not under arrest and that is why he was not handcuffed and the doors were not locked during the transfer, since there was no reason for him to try to escape. Apparently that proved a hurried assumption resulting in the uncanny death of the young man.
An investigation into the details that led to this tragic event is currently under way as there will probably be an official announcement later today or tomorrow.
